This is a post for those who struggle with anxiety about food, around the holidays especially.
On social media, around the holidays, I see alot of talk about going on a diet to "burn off" the food you ate or going on some sort of weight loss/ maintaing program to try to not gain weight from eating the food you are eating over the holidays.
And I want to say :YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE COMPENSATORY BEHAVIOUR BECAUSE YOU CHOSE TO FUEL YOUR BODY.
The food you eat over the holidays may feel like extra, but in reality the body is built to burn energy, and supplying it the energy it needs to be able to keep you alive and functioning is not a bad thing.
You do not have to compensate because you chose to fuel your body.
I'm not saying not to do joyful movement and excercise during the holiday season.
Go on walks to look at the Christmas lights, or go on walks during the day to be enriched by the beauty of the changing leaves and colorful trees right now.
Go on bike rides to release stress or go to the gym if you want to release some lovely endorphins.
But, don't go on a diet or excerise program to compensate for the food you are using to fuel your body. That's like buying an extra fireplace to conpensate for having more firewood.
You have energy right to eat for enjoyment over the holiday season and to fuel your precious vessel of life with what is needs to be alive and sustained.
And. I want to remind everyone that fat and thin are not feelings, So, after holiday meals that may feel like extra, try to avoid saying things like "I feel fat".
Rather, try to use emotion words, like " I feel shameful", then problem solve by regulating that emotion of shame, guilt, or what you may feel if your struggle with eating around this time of the year.
But remember :You should not feel shame or guilt for taking care of yourself and eating for pleasure.
You are a human being with the basic need to fuel your body- don't feel shame for any extra fuel you give it to keep you functioning and alive for another joyful season.
I wish everyone good health.
With love,
Aneesha.
